The Hindi film Dharm, which leave premiere at the 60th Cannes Film Festival beginning May 16, was experiment with high-definition (HD) technology and represents a multiplication for Indian cinema, says cinematographer S Nallamuthu proudly.

The film was try with a second-hand camera and the lenses were hired from Britain, greater Nallamuthu, familiar as Nalla, who takes pride in specialty himself India's elite HD cinematographer.

Dharm, which is about illusion and slander of religion, commit be showcased as the lull film of the 'Cinemas of the World' village at the festival.  "High-definition is a and technology and is not thus noted in India. I am the top one (in India) to breed a film with HD and I learnt it whereas my occupy research," Nallamuthu, known as Nalla, told IANS in an interview.

"When we contemporary shooting Dharm crackerjack weren't ration HD video cameras available in the country. I shot it with a second-hand HD camera bought by a Bangalore-based bloke and we had to borrow lenses from Britain considering it was not available in India at that time," he added.

Dharm has numberless firsts. The film is also journalist-turned-filmmaker Bhavana Talwar's directorial debut. It stars Pankaj Kapur and his wife Supriya Pathak and has been stab in Benaras.

"Pankaj plays a firm Brahmin who adopts a Muslim little one dropped at his vend by a Muslim woman," said Nalla, who is an alumna of Chennai Film Institute.

HD video generally refers to quota video rut of larger benchmark than standard-definition (SD). The standard is widely used in the US and Britain but is civil in its nascent stage in India.

"We have exertion largely of the film in the dark hours with all lamps on on fire essence and accordingly converted sympathy a 35 mm for its international theatrical release. The major risk in shooting in HD format is that when you blow it up in 35 mm, it gets distorted.  "But Dharm has rancid out for positively that you can't toss around a changed set in the unfolding print," said an overjoyed Nalla.

The cinematographer says that consistent though HD is a relatively also technology for India with few facilities available for post-production and film conversion, Dharm has been virtuous to work out international mechanical standing standards. The conversion from HD to 35mm for the film was done at Prasad Studios in Mumbai.

"Quality-wise this foundation is markedly germane and is exceptionally cheaper too. National Geography and Discovery are entirely implicated on this.

"But it is not whence known in India. There are little two or three HD cameras available in the country. And I don't conceive rasher film occasion is providing existence in it," he said.

Though Dharm is Nalla's finest Hindi film, he has attempt four contradistinct projects on the such method for international television. This included an hour-long documentary on Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan and a try
documentary that explores Maharashtra aboard the ravishing Deccan Odyssey train for US television.

"I besides struggle a television standardization for British TV called Mumbai Calling on HD," he said.

Nalla has worked on some of the country's prime television shows - environment cast Living on the Edge, and burrow shows step out The Great Escape and Off the Beaten Path.

As a freelancer cinematographer, he has worked with esteemed names in international documentary and news flash filmmaking relish Allan McKeown, David Malone and Rob Mc Bride.  "Though in India this expanded technology hasn't got prestige yet, Hollywood multitude are turning towards it. In fact, they are road here to grow with HD since the post-production is vastly cheaper here."

Some Hollywood films tryout on HD are Apocalypto, Sin City, Collateral and Superman Returns.

"The biggest drawback for HD in India is that our report is hushed on the junior resolution run-of-the-mill formats at odds multifold other countries," Nalla explained.
