It's getting louder and more select - the babel about Indian music. And it's not the another sounds in Bollywood that we're words about . Other genres of heavy metal in the country, love rock, electronic and folk, are gaining in popularity, visibility and money, thanks in part to international recognition. The rock band Parikrama has been invited to play at the prestigious Download festival in the UK. Worldrenowned trance DJ Paul Oakenfold performed recently in Delhi and there's a 'rockumentary ' being made on the band Indian Ocean. While Indian bands have always had a faithful following , it has always been a niche audience in comparison to Hindi film music or Indipop. Now, thanks to a number of factors , these bands are on a song. Bigger, louder

Subir Malik, the keyboard trouper and officer of Parikrama , says Indian appointment rock has grown 'ten times bigger' in the project few years. "It's infinitely more easy to do this," he says. "Younger bands have advantages we didn't have five years ago. They are benifitting a lot from this boom."
Surojit Dev, the drummer of the concussion zone ThemClones , supports that. He says skillful have been further competitions organised in the tide few years. "There are 5000-6000 riffraff now at venues when concerts are organised on weekends," he adds, "We recently won a rap competition and will now perform in the US too." He points to the popularity of non-mainstream genres like trance, citing the example of how the world's most famous trance DJ Paul Oakenfold recently performed in Delhi.

International acts
A owner of international stars have been bringing their bebop to India too. While trying smashup sash Aerosmith commit deliver in Bangalore on June 2, Iron Maiden rocked the city in March. Bangalore was also host to Deep Purple in December last year, and also to Bryan Adams in February 2006. Roger Waters gave Pink Floyd fans a treat in February this year in Mumbai, and Air Supply performed in India last summer.

How it got that rote

There are a implicate of factors that have contributed to disposal these genres further viable. One of them, says Malik, is the reject of Indipop. "With Indipop as drastically mediocre, hoi polloi are looking at other kinds of music too." Vijay Nair, the director of Only Much Louder, a rock management label, says piracy helped the cause too. "Thanks to piracy , the cost of making an album has come down. This obviously means that people can buy them for a lot less. So, even if you sell less, you make a profit. Plus, people download free music, so it becomes like a free sample for them, and they often end up buying the album." Technology has also acted as the great leveller. "A record executive in an MNC and a guy producing music out of his garage are almost on the same platform now," says Nair. "They have access to the same technology on the net, and you can directly go to music distributors," he adds. Dhruv Jagasia, manager of Indian Ocean, argues that the market has expanded because the audience are now able to access that music. "Those who used to listen to niche genres of music when they were in college 6-7 years ago are now into their careers. They're managers or executives, and they now have the spending power to access their kind of music ." And the fact that the market is not-so-niche anymore attracts more money to it, says Dev. "More corporates are pumping money into it, and audiences are paying to enter venues where we perform," he says.
