It's strange but true. The Rolls Royce that Vidhu Vinod Chopra gifted so flamboyantly to Amitabh Bachchan yesterday, with all television cameras so excitedly trained on the "historical moment", has gone back to the show-room! After the hype and hoopla is over and the last of the cameras have been switched off, the car is back where it has always belonged.
At least for now. Says Mr Bachchan, "Yes, Vinod is going to gift a car to me and I'm very happy about it. But this Rolls Royce isn't the actual car that Vinod has gifted me. It was just a token gesture. The car you saw was from the showroom. My actual gift will only arrive later."
But yes, Chopra's "huge act of generosity" is still being discussed. (And no, it won't do Eklavya which is due for release soon, much harm.) So where was the need to present a 'token' car to a man and an actor whom the director so obviously admires, in such a hurry, with the entire press and his frail mother in tow? Says a source, "This kind of desperate flamboyance is typical of Chopra. In trying to create a hype for his film around the Rolls Royce, he jumped the queue."
Meanwhile, word has it that Big B has worked in Eklavya free of cost, so the car is probably a compensation for his efforts. Incidentally Eklavya isn't the first film the actor has done free of cost. Earlier too, he didn't charge Vinod Chopra's protege Sanjay Bhansali a single penny for Black . ….read more
