Ever since Tyeb Mehta’s Mahishasura made history by raking in a record price at Christie’s auction last year, Indian art hasn’t been quite the same. In its wake has come more art, greater hype and, of course, unheard of moolah. Christie’s preview for its Modern and Contemporary Indian art sale on September 20, held at the Imperial in Delhi last Tuesday, was all that and more. Of the 100 works that will be up for grabs at the sale, 40 — some flown from New York for the preview — were displayed at the event. Sourced from private collections in Paris, London, New York and worth at least $15-20 million, the collection was an art connoissuer’s delight. The highpoints were Mehta’s Bullhead (estimate price Rs 3.7- 4.6 crore), S H Raza’s Laterre (Rs 1.3- 2.3 crore), F N Souza’s Red Tower with Trees (Rs 1.3-2.3 crore) and Akbar Padamsee’s Untitled (Rs 1.6-2.3 crore). Amid the demi-gods, the crop of younger artists like Atul Dodiya, Jitish Kallat and Anjum Singh also made an appearance. “We have procured some rare canvases from the 1950s. The Souza canvas, for instance, is from his days in London and was sourced from Gallery One’s Robin Howard’s personal collection. The Raza piece is from a French collection, portraying his transition from abstract to form,’’ says Dr Hugo K Weihe, international director, Asian Art, at the Christie’s auction.
